Dr. Leslie Bowen

He obtained his Bachelor and Doctoral degrees in Ceramics at Leeds University, England in the 1970’s. In 1977, he joined the Materials Research Laboratory, Pennsylvania State University, contributing to the development of piezocomposite materials and other acoustic transducer technologies. He joined GTE Sylvania in 1980 at GTE Laboratories in Waltham, Massachusetts, performing research into electronic ceramics and devices before becoming Manager of Ceramics R&D in 1984, overseeing research into structural and optical ceramics.
In 1991, Dr. Bowen founded Materials Systems Inc. (MSI), a high technology manufacturing company that develops and manufactures broadband transducers and arrays for sonar applications as well as transparent armor for military vehicles. MSI supplies piezocomposite acoustic transducers for several important Navy sonar systems that are used for defense against underwater mines and enemy submarines. MSI’s composite transducers are sold worldwide for use in commercial underwater surveying, mapping and navigation, as well as for industrial ultrasound applications.
Dr. Bowen holds 14 U.S. and several foreign patents and has co-authored over 30 publications. He has been a member of The American Ceramic Society for thirty years and is active in the New England Section, receiving its F.H. Norton Award in 1998. He is also a member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Society for Mechanical Engineers and the National Defense Industrial Association. Dr. Bowen is a strong advocate for American small business, a member of the Board of the Smaller Business Association of New England, and an active member of the National Small Business Association.
