Yoshio Bando is a Fellow of the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) as well as Director-general of the International Center for Young Scientists (ICYS) and Deputy-director of the WPI Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (MANA), NIMS.
He received his Ph.D. from Osaka University in 1975 and joined the National Institute for Research in Inorganic Materials (at present NIMS) the same year. From1979 to1981, he was a visiting scientist at Arizona State University. He also served as a Professor at Tsukuba University from 1992 to 2008.
Dr. Bando’s current research concentrates on the synthesis and property of novel inorganic nanotubes/nanowires and TEM analysis. The research that he and his group did on the discovery of nanothermometer, the development of large scale synthesis of BN nanotubes, and the creation of various kinds of new nanotubes/nanowires has been internationally accepted.
Dr. Bando has received a number of awards including the 16th Tsukuba Prize (2005), Academician, World Academy of Ceramics (2004), Seto Award from the Japanese Society for Electron Microscopy (1994), Academic Awards from the Science and Technology Agency of Japan (1994) and the Japanese Ceramic Society (1997). He has published over 450 peer-reviewed ISI journal papers and holds over 50 patents. He is affiliated with the Engineering Ceramics Division of The American Ceramic Society.
