ACerS History: Evolution of the Logo
![]()
In the seal’s center sits a classical female figure, representing Science. In one had she holds a set of scales, to signify one of ceramics’ most common tools. In the other, she holds a chemistry retort, to symbolize chemistry’s role in ceramics. Surrounding Science are ceramic goods, ranging from crude products such as pipe and brick to fine art pieces like plates and vases. Behind this scene sits a kiln, because, all clay products are trusted to it’s care for final completion.
In 1987, ACerS replaced the logo with a more contemporary logo design. The new logo adds the representation of both the technology and the international community that have become such integral parts of the ceramics industry and of the Society in the twentieth century.

The current logo is made of three overlapping elements; a triangle, representing phase diagrams; a globe, symbolizing the Society’s international membership; and a sweeping S, which symbolizes how the Society pulls together various aspects of the ceramics community.
