The Ceramic Educational Council (CEC) was founded in 1938 to stimulate, promote, and improve ceramics education. The CEC currently has over 220 members.
Mission
Founded in 1938, the Ceramic Educational Council (CEC) is an organization dedicated to stimulating, promoting and improving ceramics education. The CEC provides a national forum for discussing issues pertinent to ceramic education, curricula and institutional affairs. Its goal is to enhance interaction among those concerned with ceramic education. The CEC provides recruiting assistance to ceramic schools and supports NICE in matters of ceramic engineering education and accreditation. The Council also represents the Society in matters pertaining to ceramic education as specifically authorized by the Board of Trustees.
An associate member of the American Society for Engineering Education, the Ceramic Educational Council sponsors a biennial educational colloquium in conjunction with NICE and administers the Student Speaking Contest at MS&T.
Activities
The CEC promotes several education-related activities, which are listed below.
Student Speaking Contest CEC organizes a speaking contest for undergraduates at the ACerS Annual Meeting/MS&T. The entry deadline is generally in May prior to MS&T.
See a PDF of the contest rules.
For more information, please contact the CEC Vice President.
Graduate Student Poster Contest
CEC recognizes the best poster presentations at the ACerS annual meeting each year through its graduate student poster contest. Entries should be made by writing 'Student Poster Contest' on the abstract form when it is submitted for the annual meeting.
Details:
The purpose of the contest, which is open to graduate students or persons who received M.S. or Ph.D. degrees within six months of the Annual meeting, is to recognize superior research performed during graduate study. First, second, and third place prizes are given in the amounts of $250, $150, and $100 respectively. Recognition will be given to the winners at the Annual Meeting Banquet. Entries will be displayed in a designated area of the session to which the paper is assigned. Contestants must remain with the paper during the session. Posters will be evaluated on technical content, poster quality, and effectiveness of the verbal explanation. To enter, complete and return the Abstract form for the annual meeting (available in the on-line conference management portion of the ACerS web page). On the form, write “Student Poster Contest” in large red letters. Entry deadline is the same as the abstract deadline for the Annual meeting, typically mid-November prior to the meeting.
For more information, please contact the CEC President-Elect.
Outstanding Educator Award
Each year, the CEC recognizes an outstanding educator. The deadline for nominations is January 1 prior to the annual meeting.
Biennial colloquium co-sponsored with NICE
Every second year, CEC and NICE co-sponsor a colloquium on education issues in the field of ceramics. If you have topics that you would like to see discussed, please contact a CEC Officer.
